With kind Regards, Coordinator Brochure POWER QUALITY ANALYSIS & IMPROVEMENT TECHNIQUES 28thMarch-2009 In its broadest sense, Power Quality is asset of boundaries that allows electrical systems to function in their intended manner without significant loss of performance or life. The term is used to describe electric power that drives an electrical load and load’s ability to function properly with that electric power. Without the proper power, an electrical device (or load) may malfunction, fail prematurely or not operate at all. There are many ways in which electric power can be of poor quality and many more causes of such poor quality power. In today’s digital economy, availability of reliable and good quality power to an industry could make vital contribution to its profitability and growth to face global competition. Poor quality can lead to i. Poor efficiencies and malfunctioning of operating equipments ii. Reduced life of equipments iii. Protection Problems iv. Poor quality of products Power quality problem is manifested in voltage or current or both causing maloperation / failure of equipment. Typically an interruption of power for small duration can result into huge loss of industries and software installations where sensitive electronic equipments are used. Evaluations of economic impact of power quality start with understanding of power quality problems and the sensitivity of equipments to power quality variation. The following topics in the area of power quality will be covered during the one day workshop. Application of Power Electronics in Power Systems. High Power Converters of HVDC Transmission. Introduction to FACTS controllers & their modeling. Effects of poor Power Quality and disturbances. Improvement of above using FACTS. Power Quality monitoring and regulation using FACTS devices. Real Time digital simulation for FACTS devices. Power Quality case studies and standards.
